Helikopter bisa naik ke atas karena ada gaya angkat yang dihasilkan oleh baling-baling helikopter. Prinsip baling-baling ini sama dengan prinsip sayap pesawat pada umumnya.

Ketika dilihat dari samping, bentuk bilah baling-baling helikopter akan tampak seperti gambar di atas. Ketika bilah berputar, udara di depan bilah akan menumbuk bagian bawah bilah. Karena hal ini, bilah akan mendapatkan gaya dorong ke atas. Besarnya gaya angkat (gaya dorong ke atas) ditentukan oleh kecepatan putar baling-baling, luas penampang bilah dan sudut serangan (angle of attact).

Ketika baling-baling berputar, berlaku hukum kekekalan momentum sudut yang menyebabkan badan pesawat akan berputar berlawanan arah dengan arah putar baling-baling. Untuk mencegah berputarnya badan pesawat diperlukan gaya pembalik, yaitu dibuatnya baling-baling pada ekor pesawat.

Bila kekurangan zat ini, akan mudah menyebabkan sistem kontrol syaraf menjadi terlalu tegang, misalnya timbul gejala kepanasan atau kejang-kejang.
